“Truth” is based on the time that Karl Rove planted a story that Dan Rather dived on during the 2004 election cycle. The story ultimately forced Rather off the airwaves, but no one was quite sure why it happened. First-time director James Vanderbilt adapts Mary Mapes’ book about the matter. Mapes was Rather’s producer, so you can imagine that her take on the story portrays them as the victim. But, they kinda were the victim.
Dan Rather had a previous dust-up with George H.W. Bush back in the early 90s that led to bad blood between the Bush camp and Rather. While George W. Bush was trying to consolidate power during his 2004 campaign, the opportunity came to throw a powerful media figure off his trail. While it will probably be years before we get the truth behind what happened, a rather quickly shuffled off film about the matter doesn’t seem that unbiased.
The Blu-Ray comes with a Digital HD copy, featurettes, commentary and Blu-Ray exclusive deleted scenes/featurette as the special features. The A/V Quality is quite stunning for a rather quiet drama. The 1080p transfer sports little to no distortion. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is quite expansive across all channels. I’d recommend a rental before a purchase.
