RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES

RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES REVIEWED

“Return of the Killer Tomatoes” was a film that I first encountered on VHS inside an indie pharmacy chain. This wasn’t a great pharmacy, as they went out of their way to cheap out on everything. You’d have a bunch of New World movies, a copy of Annie that looked like it was donated, Defenders of the Earth episode compilation and a rather new copy of House II. I spent my time delving through the New World movies, as it seemed that this place got a discount on those movies. When I first watched it, I appreciated it all the movie within a movie implications, but even that goes away.

By creating a cult sequel to an uber cult film, the makers of this outing had their work cut out for them. Killer Tomatoes hadn’t become a minor brand via the NES tie-in game or the FOX Kids cartoon yet. So, what can you make of the film? It’s a cult mess that tries to poke fun at its original setup with the sensibilities of a ZAZ movie. While that brand of comedy might go over the heads of younger videos, there’s a special hilarity to be had watching tomatoes be turned into people. Films like this getting a Blu release is why I love Arrow to death.
