THE ZERO BOYS REVIEWED
“The Zero Boys” is a slasher film by way of wilderness survival flick. Downplaying nudity and cheap gore, we get to see what the “Island of Death” director can do when he reels it in. The result is probably the strongest slasher flick that you’ve never seen. Women are treated as capable individuals, characters don’t make dumb choices and all of the danger plays real.
What was it about slasher and survival movies in the 1980s? They’re all cut to run like Ramones records, but they want to keep you in a constant sense of danger. The difference with this film is that everyone is pretty likeable and you want them to live. That’s not going to happen, but you do get to hear an early Hans Zimmer score. I wish Arrow US would keep finding more films like this.
