GLEN CAMPBELL GOODTIME HOUR COUNTRY SPECIAL, THE

GLEN CAMPBELL GOODTIME HOUR COUNTRY SPECIAL REVIEWED

“Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour Country Special” is nearly an hour of classic Country perfection. Glen Campbell mastered the Golden era variety show while bringing his country stylings to the forefront. Being the sole show to survive CBS’s rural purge, Glen Campbell knew how to balance both worlds to make audiences happy. That’s not why I’m watching it. I’m watching this slice of Americana from a historical perspective.

Very rarely could you stage a major network showcase for the Kings of Country at the time. Jerry Reed, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Mel Tillis, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and the Mike Curb Congregation came together in the best rag-tag assembly since Waynestock. For a musical special that lasts less than an hour, it feels like a three hour televised concert. Show this one to your kids, people. If your kids don’t like it, get new kids.
