Sun Ra has many names.
“Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise” is a stunning Robert Mugge documentary. Shot between 1978 and 1980, Mugge captures major musical and personal moments between Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC. The documentary follows Sun Ra’s delving into electronic equipment in production while giving a great deal of time to his personal philosophy. Modern music fans might be turned off by an arthouse performer that demands so much of your attention. Still, the list of people that this man influenced is lengthy. That should count for something. The Blu-Ray comes with extended audio performances as the special features.
