It would be one of my favorite movies of 2015, but I’m not totally sure how I feel about it. The feel, the colors and the mood are all on point. However, I feel like I’m just seeing “True Grit” without the charm at times. Plus, Fassbender still seems to be having great difficulty playing American characters.
Kodi Smit-McPhee handles his lead role well, but he’s playing a goofy 16 year old out of his element. Is it really that hard for a kid to convey that? I buy that he’s a rich kid coming to America to find his sweetheart. It’s just that as the film goes on, I see no reason why Fassbender shouldn’t just shoot him and go on his merry way. But, I guess I’m mean.
The Blu-Ray comes with a Digital HD copy, featurette and deleted scenes. The A/V Quality is stunning for an indie effort. The 1080p transfer is practically spotless. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track makes the Western environment and gunplay come to life. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
