PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING

PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING REVIEWED

“Piranha II: The Spawning” is a goofy movie split between the direction of the guys that gave us The Visitor and Avatar. If you take into account that Joe Dante’s trailer editing pal was the first director on the movie, then The Spawning went through three directors before becoming Piranha II. The journey to Blu-ray was long, but was it worth it? The answer is sure. If you’re a fan of gratuitous tit shots and general Italian B-movie cinema fluff, this will do it for you. I just like the idea of James Cameron directing a movie about fish with dentures flying out of the water.

The James Cameron connection is the movie’s only modern selling point. I enjoyed the early Lance Henriksen role, but that’s not enough for the normies. The film is a certifiable mess that serves as this milestone between an era ending and a new one beginning. If you look at it as the Corman era coming to a close, as the blockbuster talent of the 80s emerged…that’s one thing. But, most will just want to see the copious amount of tit shots and gore.

Stellar work.
