BURNING BLUE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Two Navy fighter pilots find themselves in the midst of a forbidden relationship throwing their lives and careers into disarray.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Burning Blue” is a look into the life of modern homosexuals in the Navy. The days of Top Gun have now dropped the hidden meaning and went straight in the open, even as witch hunts threaten to expose them to the world. Following a near fatal crash, NCIS starts digging up the connection between two pilots. What are these men to do when everything they know in the world is being threatened. Why can’t the government, the NCIS and everyone else just leave them alone to fly their jets somewhere over the rainbow?!?

While romance in the military has been covered to death, there’s something new here. So much of the movie treats their love as just another romance until the legal investigation side begins. A lot of early talk has pegged the film as being confusing and I’ve got to agree with them. For every progressive idea we see, there are about four that take it back a few decades. While I won’t call the film a mess, it is an interesting failure that stumbles around all the way until the end. I feel bad for Tammy Blanchard’s character, as she seems so utterly confused by everything that has happened. If anything, she’s a less developed Harper Pitt. For those of you that don’t keep up with the American stage, you can Google pics from the Angels in America film adaptation.

The DVD comes with a commentary, featurette, deleted scenes and digital copy as the special features. The standard definition transfer is crisp enough. The Dolby track is a supportive surround mix. It’s typical for most low budget films. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
