“Mercy Street” is a stunning Ridley Scott production created for Public Television. Balancing a heartful story against the Civil War allows a new kind of story to be told. Well, it’s one that would probably die a quick death at the box office. A female heavy tale of trying to save lives as the Confederacy approaches is something that we don’t see in fiction about the Civil War. Hell, we don’t see many stories outside of focal points on political figures or the battles themselves.
The Blu-Ray comes with a stunning 1080p transfer, while the DVD plays the standard definition mix pretty well. Both versions sport lossy audio, but it doesn’t take away from the presentation. In fact, this might be the best looking PBS production outside of Downton Abbey. The special features are 30 minutes of featurettes. I’d recommend a purchase.
