It's like American Splendor, but it's about a young girl discovering her love of boning.
“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” offers up a fresh take on the mid 70s in San Francisco. Minnie Goetze is a young girl who’s just had sex for the first time. The kicker is that it’s with her mother’s boyfriend. While not understanding the sexual swinging and multiple partners of the era, Minnie starts to confuse love with sex. While discussing matters with her free-swinging mother, she offers up some rather “off” advice. All the while, the mother (Kristen Wiig) keeps trying to make Minnie’s sexual discovery about herself.
Bel Powley is a revelation and I hope recent casting rumors work out in her favor. She’s dynamic without being abrasive. That’s such a rare mix for modern young actors. Her focus on creating a character and living in a different world requires so much. That’s not to mention her ability to play off the domestic and fantastical.
The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, live Q&A and commentary as the special features. The Blu-Ray also gets exclusive deleted scenes. The A/V Quality is on-point with a rather stellar 1080p transfer. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is mainly environmental, but it works. In the end, it’s worth a purchase.
