GOLDBERGS, THE: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

“The Goldbergs” is a reminder that 80s nostalgia and the major network sitcom are still alive. Taking place in the memories and aesthetic desires of the show runner, we get a semi fictional look at his childhood. Years roll away, as various pop cultural trappings of the era get commented on. I loved the episode about Dance Party USA, but did it matter? Does any of it matter? The disposable nature of pop culture is something to be enjoyed.

Sean Giambrone remains the heart of the show, as he’s slowly becoming a Kevin Arnold for a new generation. Unfortunately, the writing and overall direction doesn’t give him the chance to achieve Savagian levels of acting. Some might stick around for Patton Oswalt’s narration, but I don’t get that. It’s narration. Are there people who miss the days of Jean Shepherd and Daniel Stern droning over a program?

The DVD comes with featurettes, deleted scenes and a gag reel as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty strong. The standard definition transfer lacks any major issues. Plus, the Dolby 5.1 track is expansive across all channels. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.

Release Date: 9/8/15
