THE PLOT THUS FAR

Saddle up and head for the western wilderness, where America’s favorite frontier hero, Daniel Boone (Fess Parker), leaps from the pages of history in this iconic TV classic! Whether he’s surveying, clearing land, or helping negotiate a peace accord between Native and settler, Boone is the perfect embodiment of the pioneer spirit. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of this beloved family series, here are all 165 episodes from the entire six seasons!

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Daniel Boone” was an average series that Fess Parker managed to keep afloat for awhile. What’s weird about the show is split into two parts. First, there were a ton of kid roles worked into every season. It’s neat seeing Jodie Foster and Veronica Cartwright showing up as kids, but it played weird for the narrative. Second, no one was ever a true villain. The Indians and British were played as misunderstood with only a few harboring malice. Everything is wrapped up before the episode ends.

This classic Western was one of the last major properties to really take hold of network TV. Running through the mid to late 1960s must have been a scary time, as America turned the Western into something else. Sure, I loved what Hellman and Peckinpah did, but that wasn’t something you could put on network television. The push to take a look at this nation’s history and examine our love of violence was ever pressing. But, people like cowboys and pioneers that are willing to shoot the hell out of a great many things.

The DVD comes with thirty six discs across six seasons. Unfortunately, there are no special features. The transfer is cleaned up for a standard definition presentation. The same goes for the 2.0 Mono track on the disc. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
