DOC HOLLIDAY’S REVENGE

DHR 3D

THE PLOT THUS FAR

In 1882, Joseph and Elizabeth Cooley head west to reunite with Elizabeth’s family and are stranded in a logging camp just outside Tucson. Then, a wounded Indian stumbles into their camp and they must defend him against his would-be killer – Doc Holliday. Elizabeth considers Doc a stone-cold killer but, during the course of their tense standoff, she comes to find that this courtly, ailing man has a surprisingly well-honed sense of justice, frontier-style.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Doc Holliday’s Revenge” seems like it was made on a dare. This is the second film of that caliber that I’ve watched this week. Both were supposed to be terrible, but they didn’t disappoint on the entertainment front. The film opens on the Cooleys moving from Indiana to Arizona. It turns out the Cooleys are related to the people that the Earps are feuding with in Tombstone. This sets up the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Indie westerns are always a mixed bag. But, this movie has Tom Berenger sitting in front of a green screen and narrating the events to us like he’s the lead character in a Sega CD game. The movie had to be this bad on purpose, as Tommy Wiseau couldn’t cook something up this out there. William McNamara plays Doc Holliday and I guess he took his revenge. All I heard were bad line reads in between a fake cough. That being said, I love how campy the overall effect turned out to be. If you’re making a questionable movie, then turn into the skid and embrace the weirdness. Too many people are scared about saving face.

The DVD comes with a Digital Copy and still gallery as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for the release. The transfer is on par with the last couple of Westerns I covered. The same goes for the Dolby 5.1 surround track. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
