Why Don’t You Just Die proves that modern Russian cinema can still get it. When I first started doing online reviews, FOX and others were sending out stuff like Nightwatch for us to cover. I’m not even sure if the unmolested review of that exists on our server, but I think it’s in the old site build several Marks ago. But, the point is things have changed.
Arrow Films brings us Why Don’t You Just Die as the first Russian cult movie that actually delivers. This nifty dark comedy about bad people exploiting each other is fascinating. But, we’ve seen this movie before. We just haven’t seen it with the brutal honesty of a dumb schlub trying to rise about his station and failing so miserably.
Vitaliy Khaev is great in the role of the corrupt detective father. But, he’s feeding off everyone else in the movie. The Blu-ray comes with special features ranging from a deep critical appreciation to short films and new interviews. I’d recommend a purchase.
