THE PLOT THUS FAR
John Pinette is back and “Still Hungry” in this hilarious new one-hour live event, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his record-breaking “I’m Starvin'” comedy special. In this sold-out concert, taped at Chicago’s famed Vic Theatre, the Broadway and television star delivers his smart, original observations on everyday life.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Still Hungry” suffers from the fact that John Pinette hasn’t grown as a comedian. The comedy he’s doing now has built him a fanbase, but you feel that he’s encroaching on familiar ground with each new special he records. Fun fact for those that don’t know, he was the car-jacking victim from the Seinfeld finale. See what I did there? A little variation never hurt anybody and it only goes to show what it can do for material that has grown tired and stale.
The problem with “Still Hungry” is that you have to make yourself see this without comparing it to I’m Starvin’. Once you do that, you will love it for its own merits. John truly seems to appreciate the goodness of life, & you feel good sharing that with him.
The DVD comes with the usual gallery of stand-up featurettes. Basically, you see him meet with fans and then go through the various show stops. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp, but it lacks any real support in the back channels. My receiver couldn’t quite register this release as Dolby 2.0 or 5.1 surround. Still, it’s a pretty packed release for a show that lasted merely an hour. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
