THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER REVIEWED
“The People vs. Fritz Bauer” is a great acting showcase. However, it’s not that interesting of a movie. The audience has hit a point with German historical recreations that we just get it. The Nazis were bad and the rest of Germany has nothing to do with them. We get it. While Attorney General Fritz Bauer is a hero, this material feels better suited for a TV production. As a film, it has to force itself to cut corners and find a way to create a plot that wraps up in 2 hours.
What I did find to be interesting was accurately showing how Bauer used Mossad to circumvent local government interference. The guy did create treason and the film makes no effort to try and dress it up. The last few months have been full of movies showing how good can come from repressing your moral compass. I wonder what spurred that recent trend? If you’re curious about Bauer, there are several books written about the guy. Plus, there are few archival videos from before his death in 1968.
