BEING CANADIAN REVIEWED
“Being Canadian” isn’t much of a documentary. What it is remains to be seen outside of a humorous extended take via famed comedy director Rob Cohen. While some comedy nerds will know Cohen from SNL and The Simpsons, Cohen is striking out on his own with the help of some famous Canuck celebs. Basically, he wants to have the Great White North’s greatest representatives explain Canadian culture to the masses. The only catch is that Cohen couldn’t land the two greatest Canadians: Wayne Gretzky and Tim Horton (dead).
While the material works as a fun look at the misunderstood North, it’s a series of short blasts that play funnier when taken apart. The interviews are informative, but feel like they belong to something on Comedy Central. I liked the segment with Dave Foley, but the rest of the documentary was lacking that wit. Still, I admire the overall effort to create something like this.
