MARROWBONE 4K REVIEWED
“Marrowbone” is a great haunted house movie by way of a kid orphans sticking together flick. Set in America in the early 1970s, the film plays like a Euro haunted house movie. So much of the run time is dedicated to atmosphere. Up-and-coming stars Anna Taylor Joy and Charlie Heaton get their moments to shine, but that’s not enough when you’re dealing with a movie about familial ghosts. I wanted more weight on the bones of this picture. Hell, “The Others” felt more substantial.
Still, the power of the cast go me through the flick and left me wanting to see it again. I will say this. Even in 4K, Mia Goth has a weird look about her that strikes me funny. There’s something about not having eyebrows or any prominent features of that sort that makes it hard to sense terror. Her brothers seem scared about killer daddy coming to get them, but I can’t read her face. While the transfer is pretty superb, it’s an upscaled 4K job.
It’s weird seeing so many 4K releases get that treatment. Was the disc pressed just to get the Atmos track out there? I have to admit that the audio design in the film is impeccable. However, this entire film is setup as something big is coming and it never does. Watch it for the cast and don’t hold out for a resolution.
