MAC AND ME: COLLECTOR’S EDITION REVIEWED
“Mac and Me” is one of the most bizarre films that I saw when I was 7. Now, it’s this fun oddity to dissect as an adult. Playing a kiddie commercial director’s take on The Man Who Fell to Earth, it makes zero sense. Hell, there are so many cuts of the movie across international boundaries that the Internet is now introducing us to the fact that many people didn’t see the same movie. Hell, the Japanese cut had the kid getting shot to death and then resurrected by MAC.
It’s so hard to describe the movie without bringing up how far it has slipped into parody. Kids put on elaborate dance numbers at McDonalds, while Eric’s mom makes sure that we all know she loves Coke and works at Sears. The entire affair is just a giant commercial meant to work as off-kilter branding for a McDonalds satellite production firm. After you finish the film, make sure to check out the commentary. While the director goes out of his way to make the film sound normal, I beg that you use it as a jumping-off point.
Sometimes, a decade produce something that is a mix of crass commercialism and an earnest desire to appeal to kids. When you make both sides engage in a blood duel for your attention, the end result is a once in a decade PG-rated mess. Now, if we could finally get that sequel. I don’t want that bubble gum bubble graphic to be a lie.
