YELLOW BIRDS, THE

THE YELLOW BIRDS REVIEWED

“The Yellow Birds” is a film adaptation of a middlin’ book from 2012. Hell, I remember reading it during night jobs and not quite getting why a one-note novel about war takes so long to get to the point. Needless to say, it’s the kind of movie that I expected to see being turned into a Jennifer Aniston serious role. While there isn’t enough to tug at the brain, it wears the facade of being a serious look at war. Honestly, it’s just an angry parent movie about trying to beat down an authority for the truth.

It would be impressive if it was handled as anything but TV-movie quality over its 95 minutes. I’m not going to fault the production, as it seemingly stuck too close to the book. The atmosphere is great and Toni Collette shines with what she gets to do. However, this is a film made up of missed opportunities and near success. Give it a rental/stream when you get a chance, but don’t rush.
