SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER: DIRECTOR’S CUT REVIEWED
“Saturday Night Fever” deserves more respect. While both cuts are presented on disc, the 40th anniversary of the film has me pondering why it only got love later in life. Sure, Travolta got his first Oscar nomination for it. I get that, but there’s something more to this movie. When new viewers watch it for the first time, they’re taken aback by how dirty it gets. Hell, it was the first American film to use the term “blow job”.
What this Director’s Cut adds back in are small character moments that are only noticeable to fans. Honestly, I think it destroys the pacing of Tony with his pals. But, what can you do? The highlights of the 2001 Club are there, as well as the stuff with Tony and his gal pal. What makes this disc so much better than the old one is the improved A/V Quality. I thought they’d use the same old transfer for the theatrical cut. It appears that everything has been upgraded throughout the disc. Solid work all around and it’s well worth a purchase.
