THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME REVIEWED

“The Shape of Things to Come” is quite the odd release for Blue Underground. I love that they are flexing their vintage 70s muscle, as every other distributor is fighting for every scrap of HD Horror. This film was an early cable favorite that barely resembles the original HG Wells original story. This time out, evil Jack Palance is launching suicide attacks against the lunar capital of New Washington. Palance wishes to rule what’s left of humanity as its Supreme Commander. But, why can’t humanity just return to Earth?

Well, that’s because they are running out of radiation pills. If that wasn’t enough, roaming gangs of robots rule the Earth now. Will you die from radiation poisoning or robots splitting you in half? Only Jack Palance knows and now Barry Morse has to lead a team to fight him. As you can tell from some of the shots, this movie was shot so soft that it might as well be a softcore porno. I would really like to sit in on that low budget ASC meeting that said smearing vaseline on the camera lens was going to be killer.

While the movie is fun in concept, it will take a lot to endure. Younger viewers will wonder why plot elements are tossed around so casually. That’s because this movie belonged to the drive-in circuit. Drive-Ins were a place where boys with vans created teenage mothers. History comes alive with this film! Blue Underground might have struck a new content opportunity with this kind of schlock. But, they can’t all be “Venom”.
