BACK IN THE DAY

BACK IN THE DAY REVIEWED

“Back in the Day” is a piecemeal film that never quite says anything. Mixing the Goodfellas neighborhood mafia aesthetic with a Rocky style creates a film that keeps cannibalizing itself. The cast is impressive with everyone from Alec Baldwin to Danny Glover making an impression. It’s just that there’s nothing here than can be seen in a litany of better films. While having a lead actor playing a boxer writing a tale for himself has been done before, it’s lightning in a bottle. There’s no reason why it should work twice.

It doesn’t work twice. You can throw every actor in the world at a movie, set it up in familiar surroundings and hope for the best. But, these kinds of movies have got to have a proper vision. What new can be said about a boxer trying to love and then respect in the ring? Being an athlete is hard? I get that. Crime riddled background makes things hard? I’ve seen it before. What else does the film have to offer? What else is going to raise an eyebrow and make me enjoy this outing? Simply put, nothing.
