ELSTREE 1976 REVIEWED

“Elstree 1976″ was built up for me via niche websites since its first trailer dropped. I was ready and willing to learn something about what went into the production of “A New Hope”. Then, I saw the documentary. I get that it’s an indie production and they had to do gymnastics to get around Disney legal. It’s just that this is the most straightforward documentary that I’ve seen in my life. Using archival clips that they could legally possess, the documentarians tried to craft a tale of extra and bit players.

While the documentary takes time to go into everyone’s backstory, it just doesn’t work as an entertaining feature. The audience almost gets an angle to approach the material via Bulloch discussing his rituals at Fan Conventions. But, then it’s back to ANH was cool, but my career didn’t peak there. Everyone has fun and they seem wistful. Hell, I would’ve killed for one of the cast to be angry about being a footnote in a Star Wars Trivial Pursuit game.

Die-hard fans will want to pick this up, but everyone else can go for a rental.
