CITY OF WOMEN REVIEWED
Marcello Mastroianni awakens to the Fellini dreamscape that is “City of Women”. The entire two hours and nineteen minutes of the film is a nightmare that plays against sexism and Golden Age musicals. While it might have started to be dated in 1980, the film is very much lesser Fellini. The dreamscape doesn’t do much other to say that it’s weird that women get upset by sexism and how strange that must be for an Italian guy.
So much of the film feels like a last gasp of Mastroianni and Fellini for greatness. Younger film fans will have problematic strokes over the content, but that’s such a misread. The joke is on Mastroianni’s lead character, never the women. Fellini in his older age went away from turning leggy blondes into deities and more into introspection. I wonder if this film plays better as part of a Fellini retrospective?
