MANHATTAN REVIEWED
“Manhattan” enters Season 2 with its complicated look at the race to create the nuclear bomb. The film dials down the soap opera angle enough to create a world with characters that matter. Nothing is too pretty, but it also doesn’t try for documentary realism. Unfortunately, that’s not a mix that tends to survive well on American TV. That being said, if this is what WGN keeps offering the world…I’m all for it.
Original cable productions need to be shows like this. If you shoot at a lower budget and cast with smaller names, then chances can be taken. Period pieces rarely survive on the major networks and this felt like a solid chance to break out. Unfortunately, the show has been cancelled and this is the last hurrah for fans. I’m sure that number includes a few others than myself.
