The Square is one of the best documentaries of the last decade.
“The Square” is a stunning documentary about modern freedom fighters. Watching people take part in the Arab Spring not knowing if they would survive is staggering. Sure, a lot of the material felt staged for media moments. It’s just that how did we know the Egyptian military would be willing to work with the people. Well, moreso than Mubarak.
There’s something about street level footage that makes the material feel amateur. But, the editing choices create a narrative that says death is nearby. A foreign director couldn’t capture the immediacy of the material in this way. The DVD comes with deleted scenes and other cut footage. I’d recommend a purchase.
