The Chowder Society is hiding a secret.
“Ghost Story” is one of those forgotten early 80s horror movies. Well, it’s not forgotten so much as it belongs to a certain generation. There was a grand ol’ time from about 1968-1983 where every big horror novel was adapted into a film almost immediately. Straub dropped Ghost Story on readers in 1979 and it wouldn’t be long before the Chowder Society would hit screens in time for Christmas 1981. But, what of this rather rushed and slow moving film about old men and a mystery lady?
Alice Krige doesn’t get enough credit for playing the ghostly Alma, as she slowly haunts and picks off those close to the Chowder Society. It turns out that the Chowder Society did something terrible to Alma when they were younger. Now, she wants them all to pay for her untimely demise. It’s a simple horror tale that ranked as the third highest grossing horror movie that year. I guess it was a bad time not to be a werewolf movie.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentary, new interviews, vintage promo materials and a photo gallery as the special features. The A/V Quality is amazing for a film of its age. The 1080p transfer is dark, but showcases the environment nicely. The same goes for the DTS-HD mono track that remains period appropriate. If you’re a fan of this kind of horror, I’d recommend a purchase.
