CUB

“Cub” is a crowd funded Belgian horror film that works better than most American horror of the last decade. Following a group of poorly supervised campers, we get to see what happens when a campfire tale becomes true. A feral young boy is discovered near a hideout in the woods, but his mentor lurks near by. Soon, the killer in the woods begins to pick off the bad kids, as our hero starts to learn that sometimes…you don’t tread out alone. But, that’s not even what makes the film so special.

Camping doesn’t influence horror much anymore. Audiences seem to have strayed away from one of the key starting points of the modern slasher in favor of Postmodern ironic appreciation. What makes camping so special in this film is its ability to isolate our main cast and show how awful youth can be. Our hero is treated worse by the other campers and the adult supervisor than anything in the woods. Watching children be treated as horrible little creeps is amazing.

The DVD comes with deleted scenes, SFX reel and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for standard definition. The transfer is clean for a film where most of the shots are at night. Plus, the Dolby 5.1 track is expansive. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
