“Adult Beginners” isn’t an original movie. But, it’s a fun showcase for comedic talents working off each other in a semi-dramatic setting. Nick Kroll continues to play smug, but his character goes from tech whiz to homebound failure with great ease. He never bonds with his nephew in the way you’d expect, but he finds a special ease with his brother-in-law. Rose Byrne continues to shine in these bit roles, but I’m still waiting for her to get a lead breakout.
What kills me about these kinds of films are the talent they get for supporting bit roles. Jane Krakowski, Joel McHale and Bobby Moynihan show up and just steal focus. They steal focus to the point that I started forgetting about the plot. That’s like if every episode of “The League” had Taco saying something during major scenes. Speaking of which, why can’t Taco be in every movie?
The Blu-Ray comes with a making-of featurette as its sole special feature. The A/V Quality is strong for a dramatic comedy. The 1080p transfer is supportive. Plus, the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track gets the action across all channels. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
