“The New Barbarians” is also known as “Warriors of the Wasteland” in some circle. I know it as the Road Warrior rip-off that looks a lot like that old Fulci movie about Gladiators. This movie has botched special effects, peculiar sex scenes and a bitter homophobic moment dropped right in the mix. Basically, it’s everything that I’ve come to expect from Cult Eurotrash Cinema in the early 80s.
Fred Williamson is back as a lone warrior in the wild. He teams up with a hot chick and fights his way through some random thugs. Williamson as Scorpion is typical for his 80s fare, as he keeps up the major badass routine. Everyone else looks an extra from a bad music video. The best thing about the film is the stunning score from Claudio Simonetti.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentary, featurettes, interview, trailers and a poster/still gallery as the special features. The 1080p transfer is a stunning presentation. Unfortunately, you can see where some effects shots didn’t quite work. The DTS-HD mono is true for the era. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
