“McFarland, USA” focuses on Coach Jim White teaching a team of Latino students how to become an amazing Cross Country team. It’s the kind of sports movie that used to dominate the late 70s through the 80s. Hell, the movie is set in 1987. All we need is a period soundtrack and some Hal Needham shot choices. That being said, it feels out of place for Niki Caro.
Disney has spent the last few years dabbling in these movies and the results have been diminishing with each passing year. What makes the effort so frustrating is that the talent is amazing on these productions. Is it inherent in sports movies to put the focus on struggle and overcoming the odds? How many times can you focus on that stuff until it runs its course? Was “Miracle” a fluke? Why am I full of so many questions?
The Blu-Ray comes with a Digital HD copy, featurettes, music video and deleted/extended scenes as the special features. The A/V Quality is sharp for a recent release. The 1080p transfer pops with a decent degree of clarity. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track creates an immense sound stage. In the end, it’s worth a rental or stream.
