Bloodstone is the greatest Indian American crossover adventure movie that I’ve ever seen. I think it might be the only one, but don’t let that work against the film. Working as an effort to turn Bollywood star Rajinikanth into a bigger star, this movie had the potential to blow up. But, it was buried under the weight of a heavy movie year internationally and fell out of the film fandom sphere. Now, Arrow Video has rediscovered it for all of us.
Nico Mastorakis wrote the film and he continues his amazing streak of having Arrow Video polish up his films for Blu-ray. What makes Bloodstone so special is that it’s so earnest, yet kinda dirty. They shoot the film like a quick indie production, but will then sneak in these big stunt pieces. Some of them don’t connect, but damn if they don’t pop.
Shot in India, Bloodstone serves as many things. A cool romantic caper involving an American couple that wants to set things right between India and the United Kingdom. An English language foreign film that plays super friendly to all audiences. There is literally nothing to serve as a barrier in this film and it’s such a refreshing palate cleanser.
The Arrow Blu-ray comes with a brand new interview, commentary and video essay. Plus, you get a bunch of archival featurettes. I love it when Arrow finds all of these lost treasures and Bloodstone is no different. If you dig high adventure with a foreign flair, then you can’t do any better than this release. Whip it out at your next movie night and look like the cool film nerd you know you can be.
[…] Arrow Films brings a Blu-ray that I don’t think any other outlet would’ve released. You get archival interviews that provide a historical context for the narrative. But, Life is A Long Quiet River feels more like a saved artifact than overall satisfying film. Kudos to Arrow Academy for giving Life is A Long Quiet River the kind of release that most foreign film miss in the HD and 4K eras. […]
