23) Daniel’s Pick – Bohemian Rhapsody
Is this biopic of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen historically accurate? Nope. Are important events in their history reworked or left out? Absolutely. While it’s nice for biopics to be accurate when possible, if I really want a history lesson, I’ll watch a documentary.
What matters most when it comes to films like this are the storytelling and the performances. On those fronts, we have a winner here. Rami Malek delivers a showstopping performance as Mercury and the rest of the cast members aren’t resting on their laurels either. Throw in some killer music and a bit of flare in the execution and you have yourself a movie that still packs a wallop, even if it gets a lot of the details wrong.
23) Mike Flynn’s Pick – Ready Player One
The film in which Steven Spielberg proves he has as much energy at 72 as he did at 32, in the process decimating a self-indulgent nostalgia tone to make a heartfelt film that feels like the first time we’ve had the Spielberg we grew up with since Last Crusade.
