THE PLOT THUS FAR
A documentary crew accompany a group of illegal immigrants crossing the Border, but their plans run afoul when they are captured by a gang of sadistic radicals in New Mexico.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
As five idealistic graduate students are shooting a documentary about illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, they’re confronted by a sadistic band of American vigilantes who give the young filmmakers’ movie a surprising twist. The film tackles a loaded issue, but it doesn’t become preachy about it. It gives you a chance to experience a detailed indie horror flick that just happens to use racial tension to fuel the main plot.
The crew, the coyote, and the huddled and downtrodden Mexican subjects are high-jacked minutes after they cross the border. Since they are all in the back of a cargo truck, they all figure they’re busted. What’s unusual is that the Border Patrol doesn’t normally take in the illegal aliens in the same transport carrying them. And they would probably not hear the coyote getting body-slammed and some stick-time just prior. They are all offloaded and corralled. The obviously American film crew are individually interrogated, blindfolded and bound, in an effectively disturbing series of cut shots.
The DVD comes with a commentary, alternate opening, teaser and trailer. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for standard definition. The Dolby 5.1 track opens up the dark carnage across the soundstage for such a low-key indie flick. It’s pretty impressive even when you consider that the transfer stays a little too dark at times. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
