FATHER DOWLING MYSTERIES: THE COMPLETE SERIES REVIEWED
“Father Dowling Mysteries” has such a bad luck history. Tom Bosley got talked out of his supporting role on “Murder She Wrote” to helm the series. To lead off the show, the production team made a TV movie. When the movie was a hit, a series was greenlit. While the show was being prepped, the WGA striked and the series would be delayed a year. From there, the show farted out on NBC and struggled before being dumped over at ABC.
ABC worked magic to find a way to get the series to find legs. Unfortunately, it didn’t last and the series died in 1991. With 43 episodes and a TV movie, it lived awhile in syndication and on various emerging cable channels. For most of the 1990s, it always seemed to be on some channel. But, those were the glory days of Cable TV. A series like this could’ve lasted a bit longer if launched earlier in the 1980s. Oh well, such is alternative history.
