We all remember that unbelievable day back in 2009 when a pilot managed to safely land a US Airways passenger jet into the Hudson River, saving all 155 people aboard. We would come to label that pilot, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, a hero for bravely navigating the plane after a flock of geese took out its jets, choosing to glide into the water below rather than chancing a U-turn back to the airport.
Even as we were reading stories about his courage and skill, there is, however, a story you might have missed — the full-scale NTSB investigation after the incident to determine if he took the right course of action — and naturally, it has all the dramatic trappings for a movie. Now Tom Hanks stars as the embattled titular pilot in Sully, in which he undergoes a probe into his personal life and scrutiny of every thought and action he took on that fateful morning. In this featurette Hanks, director Clint Eastwood and Sully himself offer some behind-the-scenes insight into the making of the new drama-thriller.
Sully is in theaters everywhere September 9.
