FORGER, THE

“The Forger” is about an art forger who gets out of prison with some help from the criminal element. Travolta is in the titular role and all he wants to do is spend time with his son. Unfortunately, the criminals that busted him out want him to forge a Monet painting. The film plays with very familiar story structure, so don’t expect any surprises. However, don’t expect an action film. I don’t know why so many people expected suspenseful action here.

Basically, it’s a family drama. Travolta is near the end of his sentence when they come to spring him, but he feels the immediate need to return to his family. Watching as Travolta rationalizes a return to forgery as a means to bring his family together, one is left scratching their head. The angle with the sick kid helps to push casual viewers past the film’s missteps.

The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette and Digital HD copy as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for an indie release. The 1080p transfer is average, but the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track makes up the difference. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or stream.

Release Date: 6/23/15
