EMPIRE: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON REVIEWED
“Empire” enters its second season on DVD instead of Blu-Ray. Boo to FOX for keeping that annoying trend going. If you start TV on Blu, finish the series in HD. In regards to the show, it continues to befuddle me. While it’s cool to see a modern inversion of Dynasty, as told via the R&B Industry…I still have a hard time connecting to the show. Howard and Henson are both doing stunning work. It’s just that I don’t care.
The stuff with Chris Rock was fun and kept my interest. But, that was just the season opener. The rest of the year was a long battle between surprise babies and giving Kaitlin Doubleday more unnecessary screen time. I don’t care who’s stalking her, I want more weirdness. Patterns are starting to emerge between seasons and I hope that the show doesn’t get stale. FOX needs shows like this that break expectations and find new audiences.
Most will find the show due to the Glee effect and that’s to be understood. The show produces excellent music that helps to drive the narrative. It’s just that I feel like an outsider trying to make sense of it. While it’s not for me, I respect its target audience.
