Dynamo is the 1000th film to capitalize on the death of Bruce Lee. Released 5 years after his death, the movie loosely examined the pressures that Lee faced when returning to the Hong Kong cinema. The Triad are always pressuring him and the women keep coming out of the woodwork. What is a martial arts master to do?
Bruce Li is such an oddity to describe to younger film fans. He helped kicked off Brucesploitation and fed a cottage industry of movies that lasted through the early 1980s. So, why release Dynamo now? They Call Me Bruce got a solid Blu-ray release a few years ago, so why pull up a seemingly forgotten Li movie?
I think it’s because there was a chance to bring the longer cut of Dynamo into the HD era. It’s a noble effort to clean up the surviving 16mm print and make it pop. However, what does having 11 more minutes of fights matter for a movie about a famous stand-in for a legend? Not a ton.
The MVD Blu-ray comes with a ton of special features. You get everything from the two cuts to an audio commentary. The featurettes are brand new and you get a killer trailer. I love this set and would recommend a purchase to Old School Kung-Fu fans.
