HOT SUMMER NIGHTS

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS REVIEWED

“Hot Summer Nights” is a lot more generic than I expected. I get that Timothee Chalamet is the hot new thing now, but I’m not onboard. It was a few years ago when I first read the script off The Black List and I wondered how it would work onscreen. The answer is very typically. Outsider kid is moody and meets local bad boy. The bad boy has a sister that is so cliche it would’ve only been fresh if Diane Lane played her in 1983. All the while, those pesky drug deals.

It didn’t help that I saw this movie so closely after seeing the far superior Summer of ’84. The mood between the films is similar, but ’84 builds a world rather than moving into a familiar shell. A24’s misses are still better than most studio’s output. So, I’ll give them credit for that. At best, this is a rental for the curious.
