HAPPY ENDINGS REVIEWED
“Happy Endings” was a show that I didn’t discover until it was going off the air. Sorry, people. The only reasons I watched ABC were for Lost or Roseanne before she decided to ruin America. The show features a six person/three perspective look at romance roughly a decade deep into the 00s. Everything is balance to the point that I wonder why it didn’t last more than 57 episodes. Hell, every demographic and intermingling is matched perfectly.
The show feels like it arrived a few years too early. Honestly, if it would’ve hit just a year or two later…we would be looking at a different story. But, such is the gamble of trying to nail generational influence and tastes in an ever-shrinking marketplace. But, even the people that would eat this show up are also the same people that take pride in not watching traditional TV. So, where is the middle ground?
Ultimately, I’m not sure if a show cut from the same cloth as Friends can still work. The viewership is now a mix of people who all want material cut to their precise worldview, otherwise they shut it down with an incessant level of complaint. The fact that Happy Endings was able to tell a well-balanced story of relationships for three seasons should be commended. I’m still shocked that ABC took a chance on it at all.
