THE FIRST PURGE REVIEWED RATHER FAST
“The First Purge” continues America’s fascination with nationally sanctioned murder. If you’re an extreme Right psycho, then you’re already preparing an argument. I suggest you sit on that, while I talk about the Purge. Most prequels fall flat, as people don’t want to learn information after the fact. However, a contained story like this showcases how programs about social conditioning usually end and begin as targeted assaults on the poor.
It’s such a film of its time that it almost feels like parody. Yet, I’m pleased by how well it’s doing. Blumhouse does their best work when they go down genre venues like this. Let’s hope they don’t enter that New World/New Horizons phase where they greenlight everything.
