TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN REVIEWED
“Two Weeks in Another Town” is a sequel to The Bad and the Beautiful roughly a decade later. While it works as a sequel, it’s also an adaptation of an unrelated book that gives Kirk Douglas plenty of room to over-emote. Pairing off against an aging Edward G. Robinson, the two men play creative types fleeing to Rome to make a movie. All the while, a manipulative woman waits in the wings to plot against them. It’s a little bit soap opera with equal measures camp.
Vincente Minnelli directed Bad and the Beautiful and this film. The first film worked as a biting dark takedown of Hollywood. However, this remote location shoot gave away to fantastical romance. All the while, the film also plays like Macbeth in the early 1960s. Actors and directors undercut each other, while a savory lady waits to game the system. Some younger viewers might find it dated, but it’s honestly a slice of time frozen perfectly.
If you can’t enjoy watching these capsules as they appear, then I doubt your commitment to older cinema. Break out of your bubble and give it a shot.
