IT’S ALIVE TRILOGY REVIEWED
“It’s Alive Trilogy” is this complete look at the history of certain B-movies. Larry Cohen was a maverick who left TV to help birth the Blaxploitation movement. From there, he made the transition into bigger Drive-In circuit fare. That bigger fare was an amazingly scored trio of movies about birth defect babies that eat things. Given how it was powered by the 70s emerging fear of authority and product culture terror, it’s no shock to see how it became a hit.
The original killer baby works when shot in shadow, but Rick Baker’s early work shouldn’t be judge by the little beast. This was low-budget fare designed to make young couples entertained on a weekend night. That being said, I’m excited to see this being released by Shout Factory as part of their WB deal. When certain studios get too big for their genre fare, then they need to look to outlets of love like Shout Factory.
Most studios would quick dump films like this and not try to explain the history of a 13 year long film series. Cohen had something to say about what it means to have a child get warped by outside factor and a parent being left to deal with it. It’s classic horror and it still appeals to all fear loving audiences after all this time. Highly recommended.
