CYBORG: COLLECTOR’S EDITION REVIEWED

“Cyborg” was the first film where I learned about Jean-Claude Van Damme. Hell, until I was 11, I thought Vincent Klyn in this movie was JCVD. It’s weird how kids process movies, but that’s the truth. The rest of the movie is this battle to cure a plague that nobody could afford to show onscreen. That’s not even counting the fact that the film began as a Masters of the Universe sequel. If that wasn’t bad enough, one of the supporting cast lost an eye when JCVD struck him with a prop knife.

While I appreciate the hell out of the later Cannon films, the cheapness of the productions were starting to ruin stories here. The push to have so much material happen in flashback forces the audience to keep waiting for exposition. You can’t enjoy action, if you have to wait for B-actors to keep laying down what’s happening. It’s a shaky world, but thankfully peak JCVD is able to get us through it. I still would’ve loved to have seen what Pyun could’ve done with the movie with a bigger budget and his original casting choices.
