OH LUCY!

OH LUCY REVIEWED

“Oh Lucy! is so much fun. Originally started as a Tisch School film project, the film has grown into this indie mini-hit that kinda floated around the periphery for a bit. Watching an older lady get sucked into her niece’s world shouldn’t work like this. But, watching as learning another language and trying to idolize the youth can warp your identity is amazing. Plus, I’m starting to love Shioli Kutsuna. While her role could’ve been easily dismissed, I love that she adds so much to her wild child performance.

It’s not that she wants to run off with her English language tutor, it’s that she wants the women in her life to give a damn. For a rather short movie, so much happens but it’s on a low-key level. Harnett plays its smart and Shinobu Terajima strikes those same chords that Sally Field hit with “Hi My Name is Doris”. It’s not about being middle-aged, it’s about remembering what matters most in life. A wise recently deceased man once said that your body isn’t a temple, it’s an amusement park. I believe that this film respects that mantra.
