PLEASE STAND BY REVIEWED
“Please Stand By” is a quiet little movie that slipped past most people. Dakota Fanning plays a realistic high-functioning autistic woman who wants to reunite with her sister. Unfortunately, her older sister has dumped her in a group home to provide adequate structure. Feeling a kinship with Star Trek, the autistic Wendy chooses to enter a 400 page script into the competition. When her group home monitor won’t let her leave, this sets off a runaway trek that allows Wendy to meet all sorts of fascinating people. Dakota Fanning makes this movie.
Fanning, Collette, and even Patton Oswalt work together to turn this play turned film into a fascinating character study. While the ghost of Rain Man hangs over non-neurotypical people, this feature wants you to feel a connection to this young woman’s journey. All she wants is to move back in with her family. If Star Trek makes it happen, then so be it. Ditching the traditional tics and just focusing on a confused young woman’s desire to belong is what sells the feature.
Naturally, it made less than $100,000 at the box office. Life isn’t fair.
