MOON CHILD

MOON CHILD REVIEWED

“Moon Child” is a supernatural tale about the efforts to conceive the Moon Child. If you get shades of Morrison’s work on “The Invisibles”, that’s on purpose. Dead Can Dance work their magic on the soundtrack, as Lisa Gerard stars as the female chosen to birth the titular character. Still, it’s a movie that borrows from Nukie to tell a tale of people just trying to make their way to Africa to talk. Yet, all of these supernatural creeps want them to breed on command.

Villaronga isn’t a director that captures my attention, but I respect what he does. The film has a Latin following, while being largely unavailable in America for ages. Kudos to Cult Epics for bringing this special treat to our shores. Guillermo del Toro is supposed to be a big fan of the film and I can see some of the influence. That being said, Moon Child doesn’t pack a wide audience appeal. It doesn’t need to, but I just want to get that out there.

It’s worth a viewing, but I can easily see it being something that most don’t revisit. Still, check out the special features with the Villaronga interviews. The director has some things to say about Moon Child and other topics.
