“Baja” took me about three viewings to get down. It’s not a complicated movie. Hell, sometimes the lighter fare will slip past you faster than the intellectual fare. The film follows a young man who can’t get out of the shadow of authority figures. His parents, his boss and others keep pushing him around. So, a bossy friend forces him on a trip to Baja. He meets a youthful prostitute and his gal pal gets mistaken for a Mexicali pop star. Honestly, it’s your typical vacation movie.
That is it also comes with slight hits on Trump’s views of Mexico, weird special effects and Mark Margolis showing up as a shaman. I grew up in the VHS and Premium Cable era and I saw tons of movies like this playing on weekend afternoons. While those were perfect time wasters for the kid audience it was meant to target, it feels like a movie out of time and place now. Will people visiting select AMC theaters this weekend seek this out? Sure.
But, are they going to choose this one over Rampage or Ready Player One? Probably not. In an era where the options are endless and entertainment premiums are high, Baja just exists. For some, that will be enough.
